Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The new album is LCD Soundsystem's first full offering of new studio material since 2007's Sound Of Silver, which was named best album of 2007 by The Guardian, Uncut and the Independent among others, and like its predecessor 2005's LCD Soundsystem received a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Sound Of Silver also featured Uncut song of the year "North American Scum," and "All My Friends," ranked #4 by Time in its Best Songs of 2007 and named track of the year by Mojo. In 2008, LCD Soundsystem contributed the track "Big Ideas" to the soundtrack of the movie 21. The band has since released the 45:33: The Remixes EP and a cover of Alan Vega's "Bye Bye Bayou," issued to commemorate Record Store Day 2009 and earning LCD its fifth NME single of the week. The album will be preceded by the March 22nd release of the soundtrack to Noah Baumbach's Greenberg, which features both composition's from James Murphy's original score for the film and the new LCD Soundsystem song "Oh You (Christmas Blues)."

4 out of 5 stars I keep forgetting it's Bowie   August 27, 2010
J. B. Bell
Going through my first listen now. Was dubious about buying this one due to the writings of the musical literates who listed all the influences that this album draws from and claimed it was a bad thing. There's nothing LCD Soundsystem has produced in the past that I didn't appreciate and enjoy. This album is no different.

Rock and roll is just cleaned up blues. Everything's been done and nothing's original. Shakespeare stole, so did Dylan, so did the Stones and the Beatles, as does Scorsese, Tarantino, and even (gasp) David Bowie.

The point is to make the thing you're doing so fun and awesome that no one will have time to complain.

This album is flat out beautiful. Very different mood than the prior releases. Murphy seems to have taken off his armor for this one, trading in irony, humor and up tempo catchphrase tunes for sincerity and haunting melodies.

Oscar Wilde said thst the only reason for a work of art to exist is to be beautiful, and that beauty was useless, in the pragmatic, workaday sense.

This is a useless, beautiful album.

It feels like New York city at night, fat with promise and heartache.

Buy it.

THIS IS HAPPENING, THE NEW CD by LCD Soundsystem was heavily anticipated in the wake of their previous effort, the great SOUND OF SILVER. The SOUND OF SILVER was one of those releases that sounded great on first listen and just kept getting bigger and bigger over the following years. With the huge expectations, the new release faced coming off underwhelming which in my ears it did at first. With the luxury of a couple months to put it in context, THIS IS HAPPENING comes off as a pretty good listen even if it does not scale the heights of it's predecessor.

As on earlier release LCD mainman James Murphy serves up a steaming platter of dance rock, mingling the influences of David Bowie, Brian Eno, The Fall, The Talking Heads and other artists where the influences of punk and electronic music intersect. The opener DANCE YOUSELF CLEAN sets the tone by simmering for a couple minutes before exploding into a raging rhythmic storm. Other highlights are I CAN CHANGE, the music biz stick in the eye YOU WANTED A HIT and POW POW. On the lesser side DRUNK GIRLS seems a tad obvious despite some witty lines, and HOME seems to try a little too hard to recap ALL MY FRIENDS.

All said, THIS IS HAPPENING is a very good album that has provided me with several hours of listening. Its biggest crime is that it's the follow up to a classic that fall a little short

5 out of 5 stars Must own of 2010   August 10, 2010

This guy can make awesome dance music. Give it a couple listens before you make final judgment. If you are uncertain whether you'll like this you can listen to the album free on the LCD Soundsystem website. Let's hope this isn't the final album for James Murphy's LCD Soundsystem. Amazon's price for the American vinyl is not unreasonable. You won't regret buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Danced Myself Clean   August 2, 2010

I don't know that anyone makes better use of Cowbell than LCD Soundsystem. I don't know if its even possible. But seriously, they make good use of every instrument on every album. It's clearly a mission to take Old School Analog gear and percussion from old school dance and electronica and reinvent them in a fresh way.

Somehow they find ways to keep the music rich while appearing simple and highly accessible. This is True on all the LCD Sound System Albums, but especially on "This Is Happening". Ironically, on the track "you wanted a hit" he talks about how they don't set out to "make hits", but i truly believe LCD succeeds by staying true to its heart and making music that they as a band believe in.

This definitely an album to check out if you're looking for anything with cool grooves and a touch of rock here and there. its a nicely balanced palate of funk, dance, rock, with "indie" flavor and tongue in cheek sprinklings of humor.

My stand out tracks are (in order of appearance): DANCE YOURSELF CLEAN; DRUNK GIRLS; ONE TOUCH; I CAN CHANGE; YOU WANTED A HIT; POW POW; and HOME.

If you haven't heard the other albums, make sure to pick up Sound of Silver and the LCD Soundsystem albums.

Five stars for this one.

As many others have said, this album does not hold a candle to Sound of Silver. My recommendation would be to buy Sound of Silver, and wait until James Murphy comes up with something more compelling.
